Can we add Hydrogen as a tag/thread vs just Fuel Cell?
In decarb:HEALTHCARE you can ask and answer questions and share your experience with others!
It is now added as a subtopic under Load Shifting.
I recommend locating the "Hydrogen" discussion as a subtopic under a new main topic: "Alternative Fuels". (1) Using hydrogen is not a load shifting strategy so it may get very little attention in this location, and (2) there are other alternative fuels that people may want to discuss (biodiesel, biomass, etc.).
Steve, I like this idea. The CEC has said they are not interested in fuel-switching, but I think they have to be in at least two instances; hydrogen is one (we have to make the assumption that we will evolve to renewable hydrogen and away from carbon intensive hydrogen) and WTE. I think the WTE thing is inevitable. Even Bill McKibbon thinks so. Anyway, I agree with your notion of looking at hydrogen as a fuel and not limiting ourselves to fuel cells only. Austin, also lets put up on-site WTE, and, especially Terragon.
I think that the discussion around "renewable" hydrogen will accelerate for a few reasons: (1) creating hydrogen with excess solar energy is another form of "battery"; (2) converting utility natural gas infrastructure to hydrogen may be a more "sellable" strategy than abandoning all that existing infrastructure; and (3) combustion is a very "dense" energy source, and would be something good to have in our toolkit if we can do it "cleanly".
Also, the only WTE source that I feel has legs in the short term is SWEE (sewer water energy recovery). The thought of trying to burn our solid waste gives me the willies, knowing how hard it is to separate our waste streams so that the pollution from burning solid waste is benign. What are you hearing about WTE?
