Wind power turbines are built to last 20 years but part of their maintenance is to replace the gearbox every 5 years. The DOE recognizes the large incentive to eliminate gearboxes within wind turbine designs and is currently funding projects with the hope of reducing the cost of wind power energy generation by 25%!

This advancement is a tremendous help to growing Offshore wind energy as well! Offshore wind turbine placement is limited by the high costs of transporting maintenance crews, meaning an advancement in wind turbine design may lead to more opportunities for turbine placement.

Would your facility see an impact from a cost reduction in wind power generation or from Offshore turbine placement? What about advancement in other renewables?
