Solar thermal collectors are almost carbon-free (using power only for pumps and controls). High-temperature collectors make hot water at temperatures suitable for almost any use in a hospital. They must be coupled with storage and another heat source to ensure round-the-clock hot water.

Solar thermal collectors absorb more of the sun's energy and photovoltaic (PV) panels, but the whole system is a bit more complex.
